Why Main Street Sylva Switched from Wix to a Platform Built for Main Street Growth

Why Main Street Sylva Needed More Than a Basic Website

Nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina, Sylva is a small but active community of just over 2,600 residents. As a hub for Jackson County, it plays an important role in local commerce, tourism, and community life.

That also means keeping residents, visitors, and local businesses informed and engaged. With more events, partnerships, and activity to support, Main Street Sylva needed more than a basic website. It needed a simpler way to stay current, look professional, and manage communication without adding more manual work.

When a Generic Website Wasn’t Enough

Before turning to Locable, Sylva Main Street was managing community communication and engagement with limited time, limited capacity, and a website setup that had been pieced together over time. “We hadn’t had a director before me, and I was volunteering on the board for a long time,” shared Bernadette from the Town of Sylva.

Their web presence started with a simple HTML site Bernadette built in Dreamweaver and later shifted to a Wix site the local chamber helped maintain during COVID. But as Sylva’s needs grew, it became clear they needed more than a basic website. They needed something easier to manage, better supported, and better suited to the day-to-day realities of running a Main Street program.

“I wanted to have more of the functions the chamber had,” Bernadette said. “Locable gave me that boost into the role and made things feel official.”

Getting Started with Support That Reduced the Burden

What stood out to Bernadette was not just the platform itself, but the support that came with it. “What was so enticing to me was that you guys kind of set everything up for me,” she recalled. “It gave me a boost to get going.”

For a small Main Street program with limited staff time, that kind of support mattered. Locable helped Sylva get a stronger foundation in place without putting the full burden of setup on an already stretched team.

At the same time, the reality of limited bandwidth did not disappear overnight. Bernadette eventually brought on an intern to help learn the system and connect tools like Instagram and Facebook. “You guys did all that work and that was great, but I still didn’t have the bandwidth to finish it off,” she said. “But we eventually got there.”

Features That Helped Sylva Move Forward - Not Just Manage a Website

As Sylva settled into the platform, the benefits went beyond having a better-looking website. One standout was the ability for businesses to sync Google Reviews directly into their listings (and their own websites), giving them a stronger presence and making the directory more valuable to visitors. It also gave Sylva a clearer way to show businesses what participation could look like in practice. “Look at what Baxley’s Chocolates has done,” Bernadette said. “There are some winners, but they engage in everything.”

Locable also reduced the day-to-day burden of keeping things current. “It’s very easy to update,” Bernadette said. That simplicity mattered for a small Main Street program with limited capacity. It also helped Sylva project a more polished and credible presence. “We’re one of the smaller Main Street programs, and our counterparts across the state have nice websites. Now, we look on par with everybody else.”

A More Professional Presence With Less Manual Effort

For Sylva, the shift was about more than replacing an outdated website. Moving from fragmented tools to a more unified platform gave Bernadette a more professional online presence while reducing the manual effort involved in keeping things current. From event calendars to email communication, the work became easier to manage and better suited to the day-to-day realities of running a small Main Street program.

Business engagement is still building, which is not unusual in a community where many merchants are stretched thin and focused on daily operations. But by showing what active participants have been able to do, Sylva is creating clearer examples of the value and giving more businesses a reason to get involved over time.

Advice for Other Small but Mighty Main Street Programs & Communities

When asked what she'd tell another community in her shoes, Bernadette didn’t hesitate:

"This is the best possible solution if you want to get a website up cost effectively. The recurring fees are not exorbitant, so your town can afford it. It's easy to use once it's set up, and even volunteers could help collaborate on it."

For small Main Street programs trying to do a lot with limited time and capacity, Sylva’s experience shows that the real win was not just a better-looking website. It was having a solution that was easier to manage, better supported, and better aligned with the ongoing realities of promoting the district, keeping information current, and reducing manual effort.

That is what made Locable a better fit for Main Street Sylva - not just as a website, but as a platform built to support Main Street growth over time.
